Caleb Williams - page 2

Dave: Hindsight question: Was benching Rattler for Williams a good idea?

About twice a decade little brother jumps up and pulls one over on big brother.

That’s what most signs point to this year in Stillwater as a lopsided Bedlam series seems to be favoring the upstart okie pokies this go around.

I had hopes the Sooners would bounce back from an ugly loss in Waco and finally round into form to bury a fading Iowa State team that has had its own disappointing year.

Well, Oklahoma won a tight game and the defense really showed out in my opinion. Which gives me some hope for Saturday.

But the offense…oh the offense. Caleb went 8-18 for 87 yards and 1 touchdown and 1 interception against Iowa State.

Sooners 27-14 loss at Baylor came as no surprise

WACO, Texas — Two important things were determined here Saturday on the north bank of the Brazos River:

One, Oklahoma’s nine-game win streak coming into its contest with Baylor was built on a thin foundation — mostly the bricks of a remarkable physical talent in freshman QB Caleb Williams, and, honestly, some luck.

Second, Baylor Coach Dave Arenda’s excuse for his grossly unsportsmanlike time out and game-ending field goal (that it was for points needed for a conference tie-breaker calculation) was a fraud. He isn’t fooling anyone who knows the Big 12 conference rules.

I’ll explain the latter later, but first, let’s talk about the Sooner’s 27-14 loss to Baylor.

Sitting on my perch in McLane Stadium, I knew things weren’t going to go well when Gabe Brkic missed two field goals.

That’s like watching Tiger Woods miss two 7-foot putts in a row (never mind Gabe’s attempts were from 51 yards and 40 yards, respectively).

Sooners need balance as November ‘playoff’ stretch begins in Waco

It was nice to see such a dominate performance from Oklahoma in their last game, even if it was just Texas Tech.

Tech can still toss the ball around.  But the return of some key defensive players certainly helped keep the Red Raiders under control which allowed the Sooner offense plenty of chances to run up the score on a beautiful day in Norman.

Jalen Redmond, D.J. Graham and Delarrin Turner-Yell were all back to full strength and it showed.  Redmond create havoc on his own, but that also helped Isaiah Thomas to have his own party from the outside.

But perhaps the biggest difference was Turner-Yell back at strong safety which allowed Tennessee transfer Key Lawrence to move to cornerback.

Lawrence shined with several pass break ups and blanket coverage.  And that in turn, in my opinion, allowed Grinch to have the confidence to play his defense backs much tighter against the opposing receivers.
