No excuse for most disappointing season

Not much to say. Given the expectations, this is the most disappointing season of OU football under Bob Stoops reign. And there is no excuse for it.

With the resources available to Stoops, this shouldn’t be happening. Three conference losses. Two of them on Owen Field. Ridiculous.

I can hear the Stoops apologists now. “Remember the Blake years and be happy with what you have.” Yeah, I remember the Blake years. And that’s why Blake was fired. I know Bob has brought a National Title. I also know it was 14 years ago. I know he has won conference titles. But the last outright conference title was 4 years ago.

So the question is how long does OU settle for 10-2, 9-3 and possibly 8-4 seasons with no chance at a National Title and the occasional shot at a conference title? Is that an acceptable return for paying a head coach over 5 million dollars a year?

I was pleasantly surprised by the performance against Iowa State. It showed that the team hasn’t given up on the season and is still competing.

As I said last week Iowa St. is not a bad team. They have fought and taken some good squads to the edge. They just haven’t been able to close the deal. But the Sooners jumped on them early and often and never let up.

It harkened back to the days of hanging half a hundred by halftime and having a hot dog on the sidelines. Three 100-yard rushers and Knight rushes for three touchdowns and passes for three touchdowns.

Dave: Losses getting hard to stomach

Well the offense and the defense had let us down several times this season, so I guess it was the special team’s turn.

Two missed field goals, both inside 35 yards and one inside 20 yards. Hard to believe that Michael Hunnicutt would have missed one of those, let alone both. Throw in a blocked extra point (not his fault) and you leave seven easy points on the field.

More than enough to turn a one-point loss into a hard fought win. And this isn’t even mentioning Knight’s terrible decision on the pick six. Four plays. Effectively handing Kansas State 14 points and the win. You gift wrap Bill Snyder 14 points and you’re done. Don’t care who you are.

Now I say this loss was on the special teams, but in reality everyone had a hand in it. The aforementioned Knight pick six at the goal line. And don’t pin that one all on Knight. What the hell kind of play call was that in the shadow of your own goal line?
