Dave’s Worry Meter - page 10

A week after squeeking by Texas, Sooners face a tougher Kansas State

by

Any win over the longhorns is cause for celebration because of the history and tradition of the rivalry. Saturday’s victory was also as frustrating as all get out.

The Sooners turned a 30-point blowout into a 5-point last play of the game squeeker.

Four turnovers will do that. Although it was really three turnovers. I’m not counting the interception where our receiver was tackled by two longhorns while running his route.

I really try to believe that officials aren’t out to sway a game one way or the other. But that was getting a little ridiculous Saturday.

But again it was a win over texas and you never take that for granted. And to do it while losing several key players on defense to injury makes it that much more gratifying.

Mission accomplished against ULM. 59-17 against an outmanned opponent.

On the face of it, it would seem the Sooners got some stuff worked out. Baker threw to several different receivers, he didn’t force the ball downfield. The running backs found the holes that the O-line opened for them. Riley called a much more balanced game.

The defense pitched a shutout in the first half, and most starters sat the second half. And we cleaned up the stupid penalties.

But in the end, we really don’t know. We can just hope that the problems that surfaced in the season opener against Houston have been fixed, because a similar offense comes to town on Saturday, but with much better players.

Ohio St. has a better Greg Ward Jr., and a better Duke Catalon and a better Steven Dunbar. Ohio St. will also have better depth at every position than Houston had. And unfortunately Ohio St., up and down the roster, will have better players than Oklahoma. It’s just a fact.

Another highly ranked Sooner team stumbles early. Where have I seen that before?

This has  been an unsettling pattern the last 6 or 7 years.  Ranked highly in the pre-season and inevitably lose to one or several teams who where double digit underdogs.

I wish we could start every year unranked.  That’s when we have really good seasons for some reason.  Like we have something to prove.

The issues going into this season that I worried about most reared their ugly heads in the loss to Houston.
