Sooners get better in 34-19 win over Green Wave, but rugged SEC schedule next

by

It was a tale of two halves in the No. 15 Sooner’s 31-19 win over Tulane on Saturday.

First half: The offense was on track. The problems experienced in the first two games this season were gone (or perhaps hidden, due to masterful play calling by OC Seth Littrell).

OU was up 21-6 at the half.

Second half: Offensive line failures reared their ugly head, causing a pressured QB Jackson Arnold making his biggest sophomoric mistake of the season – a pick six that squandered a then 24-13 lead and made for an uncomfortable fourth quarter for the Sooner faithful.

Tulane was expected to be tough, given their narrow 34-27 loss to a strong then No. 17 Kansas State the week before.  And we remember the close call with Tulane in 2021 (No. 2 Oklahoma won 40-35).

But, maybe we should have known all would end well. After all, the spectator contestant in the Chik-fil-a contest actually made the field goal.

Before kickoff Sooner fans clapped to the Tulane fight song being played by the Oklahoma band.

And when the Tulane team came onto the field the crowd — in attendance numbers reduced by the last minute moving of the game to Norman because of Hurricane Ida and no doubt also by COVID concerns — gave them a warm ovation.

Not a single boo was heard. Not even from the student section. That is something unheard of in recent memory.

But those fans began to wonder whether their charitable nature was being taken advantage of by the fourth quarter, when the Green Wave had the Sooners backs against the wall and it took a much-needed defensive stand to keep Tulane from upsetting No. 2 Oklahoma.

There are a lot of different opinions about the Sooners moving to the SEC in time for the 2025 football season.

Probably sooner than that as it is unlikely, in my estimation anyway, that the Big 12 will last that long once the other teams start looking for lifeboats.

But you know the saying about opinions. They are like…well…everyone has one. In my very much uninformed opinion, and let’s face it, most everybody’s opinion on this subject is uninformed unless you are actually in the business of college athletics.
