Venables: ‘I’m pissed about all the things that happened….’

by

Last week in Lincoln the Sooners showed they could play complimentary football (a balanced offense and defense) — in a good way to beat Nebraska.

This week back in Norman they showed they could play complimentary football — in a bad way to lose to Kansas State.

Both squads bear the responsibility for failure on Owen Field on Saturday night, when the Wildcats upset No. 6 Oklahoma 41-34.

And a noticeably angry Coach Brent Venables said so in his post-game press conference.

“I am pissed about all the things that happened out there today….”

The only highlight of the game was a raucous crowd. But even some of them began to file out of the stadium with 8 minutes remaining when K-State extended their lead to 34-20 and the Sooners defense had no answer for KSU running back Deuce Vaughn (25 carries for 123 yards) and quarterback Adrian Martinez (21 carries for 148 yards).

On a third and 16 from their own 41 yard line, Martinez scrambled out of the pocket for 55 yards to seal the Sooners’ fate. The Wildcats scored two plays later, extending the lead they had maintained the entire game to 41-27 with 1:58 left.

“It broke our back at the most critical of time,” OU Coach Brent Venables said of Martinez’ play.

Dave: A win over K-State will definitely mean the Sooners are for real

I would be more excited about Oklahoma’s blow out win against Nebraska last weekend, but when you really look at the Huskers and the games they’ve played so far…they really are bad.

I admittedly got caught up in the idea that the firing of Scott Frost might somehow light a fire under the big red of the north to give an inspired effort against the Sooners.  And for a few series that looked like the case.

OU took the ball first and had to punt it away after just one first down.  The Huskers then proceeded to drive the field on the Sooners and scored on an easy 32 yard touchdown pass to take the lead 7-0.

Right off the bat, things did not look great for Oklahoma.

But whatever juice Nebraska may have had coming out the locker room, they drank it all on those first few possessions.

After falling behind early, the Sooners opened up the playbook, and the flood gates, to score 49 unanswered points and cruise to a 49-14 stomping.  Nebraska never came close to putting up a fight after that first offensive possession, only scoring once more in the final minutes of the game in garbage time.

Rattler answers critics with stellar performance in Sooners’ 37-31 win

Improved play from a maligned offensive line, pin-point passing by QB Spencer Rattler, and the good eyes of replay officials came together to end Kansas State’s two-year reign over Oklahoma on Saturday.

The Sooners — aka the “Cardiac Kids” — managed a 37-31 win in Manhattan to continue their season unbeaten. The Wildcats had won the last two contests with the Sooners.

In getting the win, Rattler sent a message back home to the student section:  No one is replacing me.

The second-year quarterback, whose Heisman hopes have dimmed with Oklahoma’s offense struggling to victories, led the Sooners to this victory over a tough Kansas State Wildcats in a tough environment — one of the loudest in the conference.

K-State’s very vocal purple-clad student section chanted throughout the game:
