Dave: Worry meter high — Jayhawks will bring their best shot

by

No one said it was going to be easy.

Some casual fans out there probably came into that game against UCF thinking, “UCF will be a cake walk, they’ve already lost three games. We’re going to roll them.”

Some of us knew better. Coming off the huge emotional win against texas. Having to go thru a bye week and the possible rustiness that comes with that.

The fact that UCF had the 4 th ranked offense in the country and had just gotten back their starting QB from injury. And of course a strong opposing head coach in Gus Malzahn. If ever there was a trap game…

But in the end, championship teams find a way to win under less than ideal circumstances and when they aren’t playing their best game.

‘Superman’ Williams makes game saving ‘takeaway’ in win over Kansas

On a Saturday afternoon that saw a flat Sooners facing possible upset, freshman QB sensation Caleb Williams took matters into his own hands — literally — grabbing the ball from teammate Kennedy Brooks and scrambling for a key fourth down conversion to save the win over a feisty Kansas Jayhawk team in Lawrence.

The unusual play was ruled by officials as a legal forward handoff, allowing the play to stand.

The Sooners went on to win 35-24 in what was a much closer game than anyone expected, given the hapless one-win Jayhawks previous gridiron experiences.

Kansas shut the Sooners out in the first half, holding a 10-0 lead at halftime, thanks to long-possession scores and offensive miscues by OU, including a Williams interception.

The Sooners defense continued to be a problem, plagued by mistackling and injuries in the secondary.

Dave: Caleb to get even more comfortable against the hapless Jayhawks

Caleb Williams picked up right where he left off, taking his stellar play at the Cotton Bowl home to Norman with a convincing 52-31 win over the TCU Horned Frogs last Saturday night at Owen Field in the freshman’s first college start.

I think the thing that most impressed me was how Williams was so patient in the pocket. He hung in until the last moment several times. He wasn’t looking to run at the first sign of pressure.

He had a pocket presence that frankly you don’t expect from a true freshman making his first start as a college quarterback.

But when he did need to run, he was effective, almost always gaining positive yards, including an electrifying 41 yard scramble for a touchdown late in the third quarter.

When all was said and done, Caleb’s stat line read like a seasoned veteran’s. He was 18 for 23 passing for 295 yards and 4 touchdowns, while also adding 9 carries for 66 yards and another touchdown.
