Sooners pick up from where the Sooner Magic left off

It’s finally almost here. Another glorious season of Sooner football! It’s been a rough past month. But in the end, what will happen will happen and you just strap on the helmets and play ball. And that of course, is what we are all looking forward to.

But to begin with, as this is my first article since before last season’s Bedlam game, I want to offer my thoughts on how the year year wrapped up with the Bedlam Bell and Sugar Bowl trophies neatly tucked away in the trophy case.

Let’s start with the cowpukes in Stillwater. Now, I heard a lot of talk about Sooner Magic after that contest. And to be fair, it was very impressive how our boys drove the field in under two minutes to win the game with our third quarterback of the game.

But make no mistake about it. That WAS NOT Sooner Magic. That was what was supposed to happen! That was the natural order of things! That was what has happened over 80 percent of the time in a series that dates back over a hundred years! It’s what every sane poke fan knows will almost always happen!

Dave: Look out – ‘horns are wounded animals

OU vs. TCU — That was too close for comfort. But in the end the Sooners gutted out a tough win against a very good defensive team in TCU.

In fact, outside of a bowl game, TCU has the best defense that OU will see the rest of the year. But the victory came at a steep price. Corey Nelson is arguably the best defensive player we have. TCU couldn’t sniff a first down much less a touchdown for over half the game. But when Nelson got hurt the OU defense became disjointed and TCU took advantage to the tune of 17 points.

It took two Blake Bell bulldozing first downs to finally run out the clock on the Horned Frogs.

Red River Rivalry — But a win is a win and now it’s texas week. texas….man I hate those bastards. It has given me such joy the past few years to see the struggles that have come out of the 40 acres. Which of course have been punctuated by the beat downs the Sooners have administered in the Cotton Bowl.

Dave is cautiously optimistic, but watch out for WVU

The win last Saturday over Louisiana-Monroe was a really good start to what may be a resurgence in Oklahoma football.

I know it sounds funny that a program who won a share of the Big XII Championship last year needs a resurgence, but it does. With a program like Oklahoma you are expected to compete for a National Title almost every year. Not just a league title. League titles should almost be a given.

But since the 2008 National Title game OU has not been a factor in the National Title discussion, at least not deep into the year. They fell into complacency in many areas. Stoops recognized this and cleaned house. Several coaches lost their jobs to make way for new blood to hopefully bring back a hungry and aggressive program that wants more than just a share of a league title.

I think we may have seen the beginnings of that knew attitude last Saturday.
