Natives are restless, time for Stoops to right the ship

by

Two weekends ago the Sooner fans booed in Norman.

It wasn’t because Oklahoma had been shellacked by Baylor. In fact the expressed displeasure occurred when the Sooners were only down 10 points in the third quarter.

It came when fans discovered the coaching staff was making a decision doomed to fail.

Oklahoma fans are a sophisticated bunch. Sure, they don’t take into account all that a coach does.

But when Defensive Coordinator Mike Stoops stuck to his soft prevent defense and allowed Baylor to march down the field at will – enough was enough. That defensive scheme gave the game away and everyone who saw it on television (commentators included) and everyone who saw in in person in Norman knew it.

No excuse for most disappointing season

Not much to say. Given the expectations, this is the most disappointing season of OU football under Bob Stoops reign. And there is no excuse for it.

With the resources available to Stoops, this shouldn’t be happening. Three conference losses. Two of them on Owen Field. Ridiculous.

I can hear the Stoops apologists now. “Remember the Blake years and be happy with what you have.” Yeah, I remember the Blake years. And that’s why Blake was fired. I know Bob has brought a National Title. I also know it was 14 years ago. I know he has won conference titles. But the last outright conference title was 4 years ago.

So the question is how long does OU settle for 10-2, 9-3 and possibly 8-4 seasons with no chance at a National Title and the occasional shot at a conference title? Is that an acceptable return for paying a head coach over 5 million dollars a year?

Standing proud for our band

For those attending Saturday’s Oklahoma vs Baylor game in Norman be sure and be at your seats 20 minutes before kickoff.

What you will see and hear will be different. But familiar.

When the Pride of Oklahoma enters the field from the Memorial Stadium tunnels it will mark a return to tradition.

Gone will be the somewhat confusing and distorted pre-game show of 2013 (and earlier this year). Back will be the pre-game fanfare that introduced the Sooner football show of Barry Switzer’s wishbone. The same show that launched Bob Stoop’s head coaching career. The fanfare that began the 2000 National Championship game.

And with it will also return the swagger of a band that has had its reputation besmirched in recent months.
