Early turnovers, poor offense lead to Sooner beatdown

by

Three first quarter turnovers by freshman QB Michael Hawkins lead to 21-point deficit the Sooners were unable to overcome in their 35-9 loss to South Carolina, despite bringing previously benched Jackson Arnold under center to finish the game.

Hawkins threw an interception on the first play from scrimmage. His later fumble was picked up for a South Carolina score. Then he threw a pick -six.

The Gamecocks put the game away before halftime, on a 33-yard pass from QB LaNorris Sellers to Joshua Simon to put South Carolina at a 32-3 lead at halftime.

Oklahoma’s defense held South Carolina to just three points in the remaining 30 minutes of play, but valiant defensive efforts were not enough, given the Sooners’ anemic offense. The Oklahoma offensive line gave up a school record nine sacks.

The Sooners are now 4-3, and 1-3 in the SEC. The OU offense has now only scored three touchdowns in the last three games.

Dave: Sooner Magic turns out ‘Fool’s Gold’

I unfortunately may have found a downside to “Sooner Magic”. And I think the downside is that
sometimes it may provide a false sense of security.

I’m sure after the Auburn game a lot of people ,including myself, felt better about our chances moving forward. We had just gone into our first SEC road game with a true freshman at quarterback and won. Everything is going to be fine!

But when you look closer at that contest, Auburn beat us in almost every statistical category except the scoreboard. Almost 200 more total yards, 15 more first downs, and over 10 more minutes in time of possession. Ifthe Tigers just kept running the ball in the fourth quarter, they most likely win.

But one mistake from the Auburn quarterback and the Sooners come out on top. And again, we start feeling good about our season. But Auburn is not a good team. They are now 2-4 on the year with three home losses.

The Sooner offense could not sustain drives. The defense gave up almost 500 yards of total offense. And after two weeks of feeling good about ourselves, we found out that “Sooner Magic” can sometimes be “Fool’s Gold”.

Mike: This Red River Rivalry was a mess on and off the field

Maybe the only performance worse than Oklahoma’s anemic scoring offense in the 34-3 loss to Texas was the local production of the game, which ran out of water in the stadium, offered something resembling candied stale pop corn, and had masses of liquored-up pedestrian football fans walking on active railroad tracks while Dallas police were screaming “follow instructions!”

I won’t say the 2024 Red River Rivalry was a shit show because the toilets in the Cotton Bowl were working just fine.

That may have been the most important thing for Sooner fans who were hit with an upsetting dose of second-quarter dysentery when a R. Spears-Jennings hit knocked the ball from Texas RB Quintrevion Wisner into the end zone and Texas WR Silas Bolden fell on it for a touchdown, ending what had theretofore been a tight game (Texas 7, Oklahoma 3) and beginning a Texas rout.

I know some Oklahoma fans weren’t too happy with offensive coordinator Seth Littrell’s play calling (and some in attendance wondered if Dallas city officials had put him in charge of concession stands at the Cotton Bowl.)

After an Oklahoma loss, I am always interested in how living-room-couch Sooners — the fans who watch the game on television — have a somewhat different perspective of the game from those of us suffering the heat from the blistering Dallas sun and the verbal abuse from people who worship a cow.
