A cancelled football season would bring a financial crash to the Sooner Kingdom

I had some idle chat in the check out line Saturday at Walgreens on Main Street.

It was on my first visit to a store since mid-March and of course I had to ask the guy standing six-feet in front of me the question ever on the minds of anyone who lives in Norman:

“You think we’ll have a (Sooner) football season?” I asked.

“Oh, I think we will play. I just don’t know how many people are going to be in the stands,” the man said, as he moved toward the plexi-glas barrier that separated customers fom the check out clerk.  

Then, he turned and said, “We got to play to pay for those other 20 something programs.”

That’s a good point.

The perfect storm for college football

Try this scenario on for size: It’s the afternoon of Sept. 10, two days before OU’s big game against Tennessee.

The anticipation for this long-awaiting game gets a kick in the gut when news has come out of the OU football program that an offensive lineman has tested positive for COVID-19.

One player. Just one player. He can’t be named because of privacy rules.

OU’s entire group of offensive linemen, who all train closely, must be quarantined for two weeks, up until Sept. 24, two days before the Army game in New York.

CeeDee has already made Dallas Cowboy Stadium his place

After a long drive from Norman I stepped on the hotel elevator about 8:30 pm in the Dallas suburb Los Colinas, looking forward to the deep pillows the Omni Mandalay had waiting for me.

I had passed dozens of college kids I recognized in the lobby. 

Previously unknown to me I had booked a room at OU’s team hotel the night before the 2018 Big 12 Championship.  

Sooners were everyone when I arrived and checked in. Kyler Murray was on a bench with his parents eating carry out. His offensive line was near the lobby piano, in not what you would call a raucous carrying on, but it was a lively conversation just the same.
