Dave: Crazy stuff happens in OU vs. Texas — but not optimistic this year

by

New season goal: Become bowl eligible.

And that won’t be easy considering the way the Sooners have looked that past two weeks.

There is no guaranteed win left on the schedule. We can’t even count on Kansas to be a push over anymore.

The defense is lost right now. And it may take a few years before it is found.

I saw some stats from the first few years of Venables’ tenure as Defensive Coordinator at Clemson.

His defenses ranked in the 50’s the first two years. Then in the third year they were a top 10 unit, and consistently stayed there throughout his time with the Tigers.

He is head coach now, so he has many more things that need his attention. Also, we need to realize that the Sooners lost more talent than anyone is willing to admit through graduation and the transfer portal.

Dave: Painfully obvious Venables’ culture change will take time (especially on defense)

by

It was foolish of us to think that Brent Venables could take the reins of Oklahoma football and immediately contend for national titles.

While there is a lot of talent to work with, the culture change that needs to take place will not be instantaneous. Especially on the defensive side of the ball.

He who shall not be named left the defense in shambles basically through in-difference. He thought he could just out score everyone. And his defensive coordinator could have made the “All-Just-Standing-There-Team”.

All this was painfully obvious while watching a mediocre K-State team with a mediocre quarterback in Adrian Martinez run all over the Sooner defense to the tune of 41 points and over 500 yards of offense.

Kansas State won’t do better than an 8-4 record this year. Unfortunately Oklahoma might not either.

Dave: A win over K-State will definitely mean the Sooners are for real

I would be more excited about Oklahoma’s blow out win against Nebraska last weekend, but when you really look at the Huskers and the games they’ve played so far…they really are bad.

I admittedly got caught up in the idea that the firing of Scott Frost might somehow light a fire under the big red of the north to give an inspired effort against the Sooners.  And for a few series that looked like the case.

OU took the ball first and had to punt it away after just one first down.  The Huskers then proceeded to drive the field on the Sooners and scored on an easy 32 yard touchdown pass to take the lead 7-0.

Right off the bat, things did not look great for Oklahoma.

But whatever juice Nebraska may have had coming out the locker room, they drank it all on those first few possessions.

After falling behind early, the Sooners opened up the playbook, and the flood gates, to score 49 unanswered points and cruise to a 49-14 stomping.  Nebraska never came close to putting up a fight after that first offensive possession, only scoring once more in the final minutes of the game in garbage time.
