Defense shows improved tenacity in ‘ugly’ 28-11 win over SMU

by

No. 18 Oklahoma’s defense made it clear it was much improved from last year’s poor performances, fending off a highly touted SMU offense and holding onto a 28-11 win Saturday on Owen Field.

The SMU Mustangs barely scratched the scoreboard in the first 30 minutes of play, trailing 14-3 at the half.

For the visiting Wolves, the Sooners resembled a BNSF locomotive barrelling down Owen Field, scoring 28 points in the first quarter and gaining 642 yards total offense before the opening game of the season came to an end on a scorching hot day in Norman.

There was no first-game rustiness for OU QB Dillon Gabriel, who completed 19 of 22 passes for 308 yards and two touchdowns during his first-half only playing time. Gabriel also ran for another TD.
