It’s time for Sooner leader to emerge

Two things come to mind going into Saturday’s OU-Kansas State game:

1) This is a game where leadership needs to emerge; and 2) this is a game where fan support needs to go nuts.

A combination of those two should bring a big fat win for the No. 5 Sooners and propel them nicely into the conference schedule and the national championship discussion.

In the past Oklahoma has stepped up when needed on both fronts.

Remember the 2008 Texas Tech game? That was the last time Coach Bob Stoops called out the fans to go crazy at Owen Field. And they did – to the tune of “Jump Around.”

And the team, then also ranked No. 5, showed up to put a 65-21 trouncing on the then No. 2 ranked Red Raiders.

OU vs UTEP – the opening game wish list

A day away from kickoff in El Paso and we’re wondering just how the 2012 season will begin.

Best cases scenario is the Sooners winning by about….oh…..70. But, that won’t happen.

Worst case scenario is losing. That won’t happen either; so, it’s more like a final score of 14 to 3 that would be the realistic worst case.

But, since no one really remembers opening games (except when your Heisman trophy winning QB’s college career is ended), the better question is what specifically does an Oklahoma fan hope to see on Saturday night?

Better to temper season optimism in August

August is usually the best part of the college football season.

New recruits bring hope of being future stars. Coaches are upbeat. Two-a-day practices are about to start. Sports writers are predicting great victories.

Everyone is undefeated.

Even the thought of cool fall evenings at the stadium provides a brief respite from the reality of those 100-degree temps outside.

But six years ago this week, some of that “good feel” was seriously deflated when Oklahoma’s 2006 season was turned on its head before it even started.

That was when Coach Bob Stoops dismissed starting QB Rhett Bomar for Big Red Imports-gate.
