A depth chart decided by Supreme Court or Boren

by

UPDATE: Coach Bob Stoops announced this week that Frank Shannon would not play Saturday in the Louisiana Tech game.

Few would have known at last year’s Sugar Bowl, when Frank Shannon was blowing up the Alabama offense, that his pivotal role at linebacker — and perhaps the success of the Oklahoma defense in 2014 — would be decided by nine Oklahoma Supreme Court justices.

Shannon is at the center of a legal battle that involves a federal government policy regarding sexual assault on college campuses that made headlines this year from the White House.

The case also risks the longtime symbiotic relationship between OU President David Boren and Coach Bob Stoops.

With less than a week before the opening 2014 game against Louisiana Tech, Shannon, a redshirt junior who led the team in tackles last year, remains on the team. But a decision by the Supreme Court on a request by Boren’s administration could effectively remove him from the team for the entire year.

This all began in the off season when Shannon was accused of sexually assaulting a female OU student. The Cleveland County District Attorney chose not to file charges against him. The complaining witness refused to press charges. But OU conducted a Title IX investigation, complying with federal Department of Education regulations that have gotten much national attention, especially since an accusation of sexual assault by Heisman trophy winner Jameis Winston was swept under the rug by Florida State officials.

An improbable Bedlam win, a huge lift for the program

Going into Bedlam, media experts said losing this game might signal a definitive decline in the Sooners program. But, win this game and it could mark a turning point for a seemingly slipping program (at least by Oklahoma standards) to instead be elevated into the national championship picture in the next two or three years.

A change in program direction could be coming. But which way?

mikesblogOn Saturday that was answered by No. 18 Oklahoma, a 10-point underdog and playing without two key offensive starters, with a 33-24 Bedlam win on a frigid day in Stillwater.

The win came thanks to the improbable contribution from kicker Mike Hunnicutt and starter, turned back up, turned reliever QB Blake Bell, who found Jalen Saunders in the corner of the end zone on a touchdown winning pass with a mere 19 seconds left in the game.

It spoiled rival sixth-ranked OSU’s bid to be Big 12 Champions.

It was the 84th Oklahoma win in a 108-year-old lopsided series (the Sooners had won 9 of the last 10 meetings) that Cowboy fans truly believed more than ever would be different this year.

It wasn’t.

OU vs. ND – something special to happen

by

A win on Saturday will give Bob Stoops 145 victories as the coach of the Sooners.

He will tie legendary coach Bud Wilkinson with a win.

Ironically, if the Sooners come out victorious, it will come against the football program that left the mark on the most significant period of Oklahoma football — the Wilkinson-coached 47 game win streak that ended with a 7-0 lost to Notre Dame and became the NCAA record that has withstood two lifetimes.

In one sense this game between No. 5 Notre Dame and No. 7 Oklahoma stands for more than an early playoff game between contenders hoping to propel themselves into a national championship race in 2012.
