Sooners kick off Venables era with 45-13 win over UTEP

It wasn’t great. It wasn’t bad.

For a debut of a new head coach, new quarterback and many other players, it acceptably set the Sooners ship back on course after a tumultuous end of last season. 

And it marked the beginning of the head coach career of what may be the next legendary skipper.

That is my take on Oklahoma’s 45-13 win over UTEP on a humid hot day in Norman on Saturday.

“At the end of the day, it was going to be about Oklahoma re-establishing the soul and the spirit of this program,” Venables said after the game. 

Clearly, the Sooners did just that as soon as they stepped off the bus, to be greeted by several hundred screaming funs who lined the Jenkins Avenue path to the stadium.

Depth Chart: The “Cheetah” plays big role in Venables’ defense

The release of the first depth chart of the season not only added to our hype over the season returning, it gave us some clues about how things — particularly the defense — will look different on the Venables watch.

After all, what is a Cheetah position anyway?

Head coach Brent Venables announced that senior DaShaun White (No. 23) will start as the “Cheetah” in his 4-3 defensive alignment. Redshirt senior Justin Harrington will back him up. 

White is a fifth-year player. He made 22 unassisted tackles last year.

To put it simply, this is the role that legendary Roy Williams played.

Lebby-Gabriel connection a key to OU’s offensive success

One thing for certain in a sea of uncertainty about what the Oklahoma team will look like in 2022 is that success will depend on the play of the starting quarterback. Well, duh.

And in the Sooners’ case, that means the play of portal grab Dillon Gabriel.

An important factor in that is the connection between offensive coordinator and QB. 

That’s no problem for either Gabriel and OC Jeff Lebby, since they were together in both roles at UCF during Gabriel’s stellar freshman season.

Which brings to mind what happened last year.
