Sooners scorch Cyclones 52-16, and now the tough tour begins

by

The really hard games begin next week.

But first the Sooners dispatched Iowa State, 52-16 in a game that saw Oklahoma come out strong, then go to sleep in the second quarter, and then end the game like gang-busters.

Baker Mayfield threw for 342 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for another.

The Sooners, ranked 15th in the first College Football Playoff poll, finish the season with No. 6 Baylor, No. 8 TCU and No. 14 Oklahoma State.

OU jumped out to a 21-3 lead, but were held scoreless in the second quarter, allowing Iowa State to trim into the margin with a pair of field goals.

But the Sooners scored on their first five second-half possessions to blow out the Cyclones. Both Samaje Perine and Joe Mixon had touchdown runs in the second half.

Trevor Knight, on in relief of Mayfield, threw a 55-yard touchdown to Mark Andrews.

No worries this week, Sooners should roll over Cyclones

Not much to be said about the Kansas game. The Sooners took care of business as they were expected to do.

Unfortunately they couldn’t keep away from the injury bug as Alvarez went down and is doubtful for the Iowa State game. Zanchez is also listed as doubtful for Saturday.

However Stoops said that Bond and Evans have a good chance to play against the Cyclones. But why not rest them against Iowa State to make sure they are ready for Baylor? We shouldn’t need any of them to take care of the Clones.

And this is where I might stray from some of the talking heads about Saturday night’s game at Owen Field. After Iowa State shut out texas 24-0 this past Saturday, everyone started to talk about how the Sooners need to be weary of Iowa State. They are a good team that beat texas and after all, the longhorns beat OU. So the Sooners are going to have a fight on their hands? Bull.

If the Sooners don’t beat them by at least 21 points I will be disappointed. They are not a good team. Usually you are what your record says you are. They are 3-5 with wins over Northern Iowa, Kansas and texas.

Oklahoma delivered to Kansas a great pumpkin they won’t forget for a while.

The Sooners beat Kansas 62-7 thanks to Baker Mayfield’s 27 of 32 passes for 383 yards and four touchdowns.

Despite Mayfield’s stellar day, it was Sterling Shepard who got most of the limelight. He had 183 receiving yards and a touchdown on 11 catches. Samaje Perine added 90 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries for the Sooners (7-1, 4-1 Big 12).

It was the 11th straight loss for Kansas, dating back to last season.

The Jayhawks had no answer for a powerful Sooners offense that scored 50 points for the third time in as many games. It was the first time Oklahoma has done that since 2008.

Oklahoma took a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter when Mayfield threw a strike to Joe Mixon, who outran defenders for a 68-yard touchdown. The Sooners scored again on their next drive, which culminated in an 11-yard touchdown pass to Durron Neal. On the following drive, Shepard’s leaping catch in the end zone stretched Oklahoma’s lead to 21-0 with 1:51 left in the first quarter.

Oklahoma outgained Kansas 248-41 in the first 15 minutes of play.
