GameDay: Soonerguys Pick ’em panel predictions and observations

by

The Soonerguys Pick ’em panel says put your money on Michigan and USC. Otherwise, there are some tight fits in games in college football today.

Our tw0-season Pick ’em champion Roger is going with Utah over BYU in tonight’s game. That might be the best non-traditional prognostication of the day. Book it.

Although the Sooners should breeze against Louisiana-Monroe, most think the Oklahoma secondary is the weak link to success thus far in 2016.

But the wide receivers got  no love after last week’s disappointing 33-23 loss at Houston from Pick ’em expert Brenna.

Today’s picks:

UCF at Michigan (11 am ABC/ESPN) – Michigan – unanamious pick.

Another highly ranked Sooner team stumbles early. Where have I seen that before?

This has  been an unsettling pattern the last 6 or 7 years.  Ranked highly in the pre-season and inevitably lose to one or several teams who where double digit underdogs.

I wish we could start every year unranked.  That’s when we have really good seasons for some reason.  Like we have something to prove.

The issues going into this season that I worried about most reared their ugly heads in the loss to Houston.

Rough start for Sooners

Just got back from Houston. It was a fun trip, until the game happened.  My grades for the week:

Venue
NRG Stadium was awesome, but the game wasn’t. And Houston fans were hit and miss.  Since we lost, we Sooners fans couldn’t say anything. That didn’t stop some Houston fans from talking. Some were just not holding back. It wasn’t a college crowd. More like 35 year old single dads.  Grade: A-

OU Offense

The Sooners should have been up by 14 early. Perine got hurt, but OU didn’t stick with Mixon and his big play ability.  When Oklahoma got behind it seemed like offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley panicked.  We should have run the ball more.  Grade: C-

OU Defense

That was not pass interference by Dakota Austin.  Even the Houston fans knew it.  Then Austin got picked on after that and things got worse. It was a bad decision by the coaches to put him on Houston’s tallest receiver. Will Johnson (outside linebacker) gave up a touchdown. He was thinking of sacking the quarterback and then their running back runs a wheel route. It took someone to bite. Johnson bit. Houston scored.  Over all the defense looked weak in the first half and played good in the second half. Grade: C
