DeMarco Murray tightly tucked the ball under his arm as he trotted off the field. He had just secured a position atop an impressive list of Sooner running backs — setting the new school record for most touchdowns by an Oklahoma player.
Murray had scored his 58th career touchdown, coming during the Sooners’ 52-0 rout of Iowa State on Saturday night on Owen Field.
“I kept that one,” Murray said. “Coach (Bob) Stoops will let me keep that one.”
The game was a tuneup after a bye week and came the week before what has turned out to me a big showdown in Big 12 Conference when the undefeated No. 6 Sooners travel to Columbia, Missouri to play the No. 21 Tigers on a country-wide ABC telecast next Saturday night (7 pm CT).
Murray ran for 112 yards and two touchdowns and scored on a 15-yard screen pass to surpass 1969 Heisman Trophy winner Steve Owens’ record of 57 touchdowns in his career.
